Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)

Many people struggle with self-criticism, feelings of not being “good enough,” or difficulty treating themselves with the same kindness they offer to others. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), developed by Dr. Kristin Neff and Dr. Christopher Germer, is an evidence-based approach that combines the principles of mindfulness and self-compassion to help people relate to themselves with greater warmth, acceptance, and care.

At Core Connections Psychology Centre, we offer Mindful Self-Compassion practices and therapy in Collingwood, Newmarket, and virtually across Ontario. This approach helps clients reduce shame, manage stress, and build emotional resilience by learning how to respond to challenges with self-kindness rather than judgment.

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC)

MSC is a structured program and therapeutic approach that teaches practical skills for:

  • Recognizing moments of struggle or suffering with mindful awareness

  • Responding to yourself with care instead of harsh self-criticism

  • Cultivating emotional balance and resilience in the face of difficulty

  • Building stronger self-worth and a kinder, more supportive inner voice

MSC is not about ignoring problems or “positive thinking.” Instead, it helps you face life’s challenges with greater courage, wisdom, and self-kindness.

Many people come to individual therapy because they feel stuck in cycles of perfectionism, self-criticism, or shame. MSC offers tools to quiet the inner critic and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Common issues addressed with MSC in individual therapy:

  • Perfectionism and fear of failure

  • Harsh self-criticism or chronic feelings of “not enough”

  • Anxiety, depression, or stress

  • Struggles with self-worth and identity

  • Trauma-related shame or self-blame

  • Burnout or compassion fatigue (common among caregivers and helping professionals)

Outcomes of MSC in individual therapy:

  • Greater emotional resilience and balance

  • Reduced anxiety, stress, and shame

  • Improved self-confidence and sense of worth

  • A kinder, more supportive inner dialogue

  • Increased ability to cope with setbacks and challenges
