Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, painful experiences, and overwhelming stress. EMDR works by reducing the intensity of traumatic memories and shifting the way these memories are stored in the brain, allowing clients to move forward without being held back by the past.

At Core Connections Psychology Centre, we offer EMDR therapy in Collingwood, Newmarket, and virtually across Ontario. EMDR can be effective for children, teens, and adults who have experienced trauma, anxiety, grief, or other life challenges. By targeting both the mind and body’s responses, EMDR helps clients find relief, resilience, and a renewed sense of safety.

EMDR Therapy

Many people carry the weight of past experiences—sometimes from years ago—that continue to impact their daily life. EMDR provides a structured and supportive process to work through those memories and release the emotional hold they carry.

Common issues EMDR addresses in individual therapy:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Childhood trauma, neglect, or abuse

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or chronic worry

  • Depression or feelings of hopelessness

  • Grief and loss

  • Phobias, fears, or intrusive thoughts

  • Distressing memories that continue to “replay”

Outcomes of EMDR for individuals:

  • Reduced emotional distress connected to painful memories

  • Improved ability to regulate emotions and stress responses

  • Greater sense of safety, clarity, and empowerment

  • Increased resilience and capacity to focus on the present
